Are You In Charge Of A Data Center? Tips For Keeping It Maintained

You know that a data center is the heart of a company. Details about your employees, clients, information about your projects, and important data are stored in the data center. Because of this, it is very important that you keep your data center maintained. Below are some tips on how you can do this.

Test Your Backup Power

One of the most important things you need to keep checked is your backup power systems, such as UPS (uninterrupted power supply) and batteries. You never know when the power will go out. With backup power, the company you work for would stay up and running. If you have an important process running when the power goes out, it could cause damage to your files. Test this on a weekly basis so you can be sure it is working properly.

Check the Temperature

It is important that the temperature in the data center room does not get too hot. If it does, your servers and other equipment could overheat, causing great damage. The right temperature for your data center depends on the size of the room and how many servers and other equipment you have running. This is because these servers and equipment generate heat.

Many IT professionals recommend that a data center temperature be between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.  Hire an HVAC technician that is experienced in designing a cooling system for a data center. You should keep large industrial fans around just in case you have a problem with the cooling to use while waiting for the HVAC technician to arrive. Have regular maintenance done on your HVAC system and generators to keep them in good working order.

Make Sure Ceiling Is in Good Shape

Keep a constant check on the ceiling in your data center. If you see cracks anywhere, you need to have them repaired immediately. These cracks may be cosmetic, but you need to be sure the problem is not much worse. If it is, water could leak into your data center, which would damage all of your servers and other equipment. In many cases, all of these things would have to be replaced.  Contact a roofing contractor to check this for you.
